Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project
Nestled along Sri Lanka's pristine southern coastline, the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project stands as a remarkable sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of the island's endangered marine turtles. Renowned for its unspoiled nesting beaches, Rekawa provides a safe haven for five of the world's seven sea turtle species, making it one of the country's most significant conservation destinations.
Each nesting season, the majestic Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, and Leatherback turtles emerge beneath the cover of darkness to lay their eggs upon the golden shores—a timeless natural spectacle that has captivated visitors and conservationists alike. Through dedicated habitat protection, scientific monitoring, and community-led conservation efforts, the project plays a vital role in safeguarding these extraordinary marine creatures for generations to come.
While the sanctuary may be visited throughout the year, the most enchanting experience unfolds between April and July, when as many as five to fifteen turtles gracefully arrive on the beach each evening. Witnessing this ancient ritual beneath a starlit sky is an unforgettable encounter, offering a rare glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary journeys.
